UAMS to offer free legal assistance for cancer patients

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Local attorneys are going to offer free legal assistance to those in cancer treatment or have completed treatment in April. 

On April 6, lawyers will be at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) giving free advise on important personal documents. Those include preparing wills, powers of attorney and living wills.

This will all be done in the Patient Support Pavillion on the first floor of the UAMS Cancer Institute. 

Appointments will be made at one-hour intervals. To make a reservation for your spot, call the UAMS Cancer Institute Social Work Department at (501) 603-1612 or email wilsonavisf@uams.edu. 

Free parking for the event will be available in parking deck 3 at the corner of Cedar Street and Capitol Avenue.

Oaklawn cancels Thursday's races

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Oaklawn management made the decision to cancel Thursday’s nine-race card after more than five inches of rain left the track too saturated for racing.

“The safety of the horses and riders is always our first concern,” said Director of Racing David Longinotti. “The rain began about 3 p.m. Tuesday and has barely stopped since.”

Oaklawn remains open for gaming and simulcast racing. The game room will remain open until 3 a.m. 

Live racing is scheduled to resume Friday with a 1:30 p.m. first post.

Pulaski Tech presents 'An Evening with Graham Gordy'

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Actor and playwright Graham Gordy, who is also the co-creator and executive producer of the new Cinemax drama "Quarry," will be the guest speaker at Pulaski Technical College's Big Rock on the Map series on March 10.

The event will include film clips from Gordy's well-known work such as The Love Guru (2008), War Eagle, Arkansas (2007), and Spanola Pepper Sauce Company (2010). Gordy's short films have won awards at the South by Southwest festivals, Austin Film Festival, Nashville Festival and Slamdance. He also was a writer for the Sundance Series "Rectify."

The Big Rock on the Map event will begin at 6 p.m. in the college's Center for Humanities and Arts Theater located at 3000 West Scenic Drive in North Little Rock.

This event is free and open to the public.

Sherwood Neighborhood Watch Fair

SHERWOOD, Ark. (KTHV) - Sherwood officials are hosting a Neighborhood Watch Fair on February 23 at 6 p.m.

Several speakers from the Sherwood Police Department, Sherwood Fire Department and business in the city will be discussing safety with the residents in the area. 

Some of the topics they will be discussing will include:

-Gun Safety and permits

-Surveillance video and alarms

-Financial protection

-Home security

-Citizens Police Academy

There will be presentations, door prizes and refreshments at the fair. Organizers hope that the event will help those in the community learn how to make their home, car, valuables and most importantly their loved ones safer. 

NLR police investigate 1st homicide of 2016


NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - The North Little Rock Police Department confirmed on Saturday that they are investigating their first homicide of 2016. 

The incident is being investigated as a homicide by the North Little Rock Detective Division. Police officers are still in the process of interviewing witnesses and looking at surveillance footage. 

According to North Little Rock police reports, an autopsy will be conducted on Tuesday to determine a cause of death. 

Police investigating death in NLR as homicide


NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Police are investigating the death of a person at an apartment complex in North Little Rock.

Police responded to 2600 John Ashley Drive around 3:41 Friday afternoon after getting a call about a dead body. 

According to North Little Rock police, they are investigating the death as a homicide.
