BATESVILLE, Ark. (KTHV) – I’m not going to lie. I think I chose Batesville for this trip just because I wanted to visit my old home again and see how much it has changed since I graduated from Lyon.

I could immediately see several changes as I drove in from Highway 167. Southside seems to have blossomed quickly into a busy area; Colton’s has moved to the old Bonanza site, my beloved Quizno’s/”secret” study place has shut down, and a Walgreen’s now sits where the old gas station and Baskin Robbins once stood. Things were even changing on campus and in the downtown area.

LYON COLLEGE

The biggest change at Lyon so far is the new Edwards Commons building. The original building was destroyed by fire in 2010, but a new 44,000 square-foot building has risen in its place, housing a campus store, mailboxes, a dining area and bistro, and the student life center.

At the moment, several of the dormitories are getting a makeover, and two new ones will soon be erected near Young House projected to be completed in Fall 2015. In addition, a new football field is coming to campus in preparation for the new football team.

MAIN STREET BATESVILLE

Major changes are going on in the downtown area. Main Street Batesville recently invited residents of Batesville out for Walk-a-Block so they could check out the trial streetscape stretching from 5th Street to Broad Street and give some feedback on the project. The layout features reverse parking; one lane, one way streets; landscaping; and much more.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Mandi Cartwright with the Batesville Chamber of Commerce revealed that other changes are going on throughout the city. The ever popular Mickey Mouse at Fitzhugh Park on 20th Street will be gone next year. In its place, a new recreation complex will stand, featuring an outdoor waterpark; indoor pool; an indoor track; and basketball courts.

More details about the complex can be found at the Batesville Community Center and Recreation Complex Facebook page: http://on.kthv.com/1nf3Q20

BY THE NUMBERS

As of the 2010 census, Batesville had a population of about 10,200 people. It is the county seat of Independence County, and it’s second oldest city in the state—that fact is proudly displayed on any of the welcome signs posted on the outskirts of town. Batesville is home to two colleges, Lyon College and University of Arkansas Community College in Batesville, in addition to the Batesville School District.
