ACANSA Arts Festival kicks off

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) – ACANSA is an arts event never before seen in Central Arkansas.

26 special performances from opera to ballet and even mime will combine with special gallery exhibitions in Little Rock and North Little Rock to produce an event involving hundreds of artists.

On Tuesday, it all begins at the Governor's Mansion with a special reception.

The Governor and Mrs. Beebe will welcome visiting artists to the mansion and salute volunteers who have put it all together.

So where does the term ACANSA come from? It was a Quapaw Village and its name means "southern place." Many people regard the term Arkansas as being native American for "downstream people," but that's actually what "Quapaw" means.

By the looks of it, ACANSAS could certainly be the original Arkansas. But, whatever the history, it's making history in the arts.
