Celebrate Arkansas' 175th birthday!

LITTLE ROCK, AR – The Old State House Museum will mark Arkansas’s 175th Birthday with two events on Saturday, June 11, 2011, and Wednesday, June 15, 2011.

Travel Back to 1836

To observe the 175th anniversary of Arkansas statehood, the Old State House Museum and Historic Arkansas Museum are recreating life in 1836 Arkansas with a joint living history event, "175 Years of Arkansas Statehood" on Saturday, June 11, 2011. The fun will begin at the Historic Arkansas Museum with living history demonstrations highlighting everyday life in Little Rock at the time of statehood. Visitor can participate in dancing, military drills, and 18th century chores from 9 am to 12 pm.

At noon event participants and visitors will parade from the Historic Arkansas Museum to the Old State House Museum, where Arkansas’s admission to the union will be commemorated with a 26-gun salute and the raising of a 26-star U.S. flag (for sister states Arkansas, the 25th state, and Michigan, the 26th state).

At the Old State House Museum, visitors can enjoy a Methodist camp meeting, a recreation of a 1830s trial, and the election of the first government officials for the new state of Arkansas. The Arkansas History Commission will exhibit Arkansas’s original 1836 Constitution. The day will conclude with a performance of the period play, “The Blue Devils,” on the front lawn of the Old State House Museum.

Admission to the “175 Years of Arkansas Statehood” celebration is free.  For more information regarding this event contact the Old State House Museum, at (501) 324-9685, see www.oldstatehouse.com or find the museum on Facebook.

The Old State House Museum Associates, one of the museum’s friends groups, will host the second event at the Old State House Museum on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm: Arkansas’s Birthday Party.

The Old State House Museum is the ideal setting for the state’s birthday bash because it is located in the oldest surviving state house west of the Mississippi River and was Arkansas’s original state capitol building. The Birthday Party, held in the Historic 1885 House of Representatives Chamber, is sponsored by the Old State House Museum Associates and benefits exhibits and collections at the Old State House Museum.

The celebration will offer a cocktail party with lavish food and drink to toast this auspicious occasion. Arkansas artist Pat Matthews will paint a picture on-site, and this painting of the Arkansas Flag will be included in the evening’s silent auction. There will be entertainment and numerous opportunities to bid on special Arkansas gifts and events during the silent auction.

Tickets for Arkansas’s 175th Birthday Party are $75.00 per person. For more information regarding this celebration please contact Sammye Johnston, OSHMA Executive Director, at (501) 664-1879 or email SammyeJohnston@sbcglobal.net.
