LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) – Around the state, law enforcement agencies are taking part in National Drug Take Back Day.

The NDTBD event provides the opportunity for people to clear out their medicine cabinets and get those prescription drugs disposed of properly.

Steve Varady, the state's current drug director told THV11 that the program helps in two ways—fighting against youth drug abuse and the environment.

"We would like these returned and disposed of in a manner that doesn't include flushing and does not include throwing them out in the household trash, and this offers people the opportunity to do that, " Varady explained.

Pulaski County collected more than 641 pounds of medication at their three drop-off locations on Saturday.

The Pulaski County Sheriff's Office also maintains a 24-hour drop-off spot on South Woodrow in Little Rock.
