NORTH LITTLE ROCK — The Simon Kidgits Club® at McCain Mall will be promoting the joys of reading and learning among area children and their parents during the 2011 Kidgits Book Blast! on Saturday, March 5 it was announced today.

The free, family event will be held from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. in Center Court.  It is being presented by McCain Mall a Simon® mall.

Book Blast! is designed to enhance a child’s desire to read, to learn, and to exercise their imaginations, and we can do this by reading wonderful children’s books to them, and colorful storytelling about fantastic events and occurrences,” said Lisa Meyer, Director of Marketing and Business Development of McCain Mall.  “A few of the books our celebrity readers and guests will be reading is ‘The Little Engine That Could,’ ‘Strawberry Shortcake: My First Sleepover,’ and ‘Shoes,’ which is about a young girl who realizes she has plenty of shoes, is moved with compassion for others who have none, and decides to do something about it.”

“Shoes” is the first book in a series by the Orphan Campaign, an organization created to inspire and facilitate selflessness, service and compassion in children.  For every $30 donated To The Orphan Campaign on www.theorphancampaign.org, The Orphan Campaign will buy and deliver a new pair of shoes to an orphan in one of 68 countries.  In exchange for this donation, a free ‘Shoes’ book will be shipped to your child.

Children also are invited to bring a new or gently used book to the event to be donated to a local charity.

During this year’s Book Blast!, local celebrities will be on hand from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. to read selected books.

In addition, children can see a sneak peek of the all-new movie, The Little Engine That Could, premiering on DVD March 22. The timeless story comes to life in this all-new, feature-length film filled with fun and adventure! When the Little Engine (Alyson Stoner, Cheaper by the Dozen) must leave Dreamland to deliver toys into the real world, she sets her fears aside and learns that with a little determination and courage, anything is possible.  Featuring an all-star cast, including Whoopi Goldberg (“The View), Jamie Lee Curtis (Freaky Friday), Corbin Bleu (High School Musical) and Brenda Song (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody), this “fun family film” (Francine Brokaw, Los Angeles Family Magazine) is one you’ll enjoy again and again.
