Officials investigate North Little Rock fatal fire

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV)- Two North Little Rock residents are dead after an overnight blaze scorched the home on Tuesday. Fire inspectors say the two were found sleeping in the attic. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Fire Marshall John Pflasterer explained the department was puzzled to find the couple there in the first place. He has worked for the department for 20 years. "The first for the department," said Pflasterer. "So it is very unusual."

North Little Rock Fire Department and police were called to the 1300th block of West 16th street around 5:30 Tuesday morning.

Pflasterer explained that in these types of investigations, information is very limited.

"The fire appears to have started in the lower part of the house-of course smoke-and heat rises, so a lot of the smoke went straight to the attic."

Danny Zarzewski knew the woman, who has not been identified at this point, for more than 30 years.

Zarzewski explained he didn't expect an overnight fire to result to this.

"Really came as a shock-when we saw the flames were there this morning." He said his family is saddened over her death. "The fact that she's got children and grandchildren-and of course her mother and father.. it's just a loss...it's a loss for everybody."

Fire Marshall John Pflasterer says they hope to have the cause within the next few days.
