My Town Hero: 7-year-old raising funds to help ease friend's pain

My Town Hero: 7-year-old raising funds to help ease friend's pain

Bethany and Anne Marie are two little girls with bubbly personalities and a bond like none other.

Anne Marie is a 9-year-old who suffers from a rare skin disorder called Epidermolysis Bullosa or ED, which causes her skin to blister in response to heat, movement, or friction. Bethany, 7, is trying to raise funds for a saltwater pool in an effort to ease Anne Marie’s pain.

Bethany has been making and selling rainbow loom bracelets to raise the $25,000 needed for the pool to be installed in Anne Marie’s back yard. So far, she has already brought in $14,000 in just nine weeks, with donations coming in from as far away as California.

"I felt a little sad, I was trying to figure out what to do for her,” explained Bethany. "I get happier and happier because we're getting closer to the pool."

Second skunk tests positive for rabies in NLR

Second skunk tests positive for rabies in NLR

On April 8, 2014 a dead skunk was found near the clubhouse of the Burns Park Golf Course in North Little Rock. The skunk was sent to the Arkansas Department of Health for testing.  On April 10th, North Little Rock Animal Control was notified that the skunk tested positive for the rabies virus.

In accordance with North Little Rock Animal Control’s standard operating protocol when a test returns positive, the city is notifying the press via this release in addition to city social media outlets.

The City of North Little Rock wants to remind everyone of the state law and city ordinance that requires rabies vaccinations for pets.  Now is a great time to make sure everyone is following that law.  This is the second skunk in the past two weeks to return positive. The public is urged to use caution around wildlife.

Mobility van could give woman independence for first time in 16 years

CABOT, Ark. (KTHV) - The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) is giving local heroes from across the country a chance to win a custom Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle. One of the local heroes nominated for the competition is from right here in central Arkansas.

Becky Justice, a 38-year-old from Cabot, has been proving people wrong most of her life. Affected with Spina Bifida*, Justice said she fought her school in the early 1990s to make the campus wheelchair accessible rather than giving in and finding a different school. Now, she’s trying to once again to gain her independence through a contest made possible by NMEDA.

“I was told that I helped to start the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) because of my part in helping to make the school wheelchair accessible,” Justice wrote on her NMEDA entry.

Blood donation events in Pulaski County for Feb.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Feb. 3, 2014) — Like a hospital emergency room, the American Red Cross must be prepared to provide blood for patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. It’s the blood already on the shelves and readily available that can be lifesaving for people like Chris Salinas.

Chris was a horse trainer who was seriously injured in an accident when a horse pinned him to the pavement. He and his family said they credit the multiple blood transfusions he received with helping him recover.

Type O negative blood is especially needed right now. O negative is the universal blood type and can potentially be transfused to patients with any type. To make an appointment to donate blood and help ensure the shelves are stocked for patients in need, please visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS.
