New Fit 2 Live at Laman Begins

The William F. Laman Public Library System announces a new partnership with NLR's Fit 2 Live initiative. The new program - "Fit 2 Live" at Laman! - will begin on August 7 and run for 4 consecutive Tuesdays (August 7, 14, 21, and 28) at 6:30pm for the screening of the 4-part HBO documentary film, "The Weight of the Nation," followed by discussion with Fit 2 Live Coordinator Bernadette Gunn Rhodes.

An unprecedented collaboration of HBO and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), "The Weight of the Nation" takes an unflinching look at the severity of our nation's obesity crisis and its crippling effects on our health care system. At the conclusion of the film screenings in August, "Fit 2 Live" at Laman! will continue as a once-a-month series the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm.

My Weight Loss Story

My Weight Loss Story

This week marks the one year anniversary that I watched the movie “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead” on Netflix, and I wanted to share my gratitude to Joe Cross, creator of the documentary that has changed so many lives and the impact the movie has had on my own life.

Up until early 2011, I had gained massive weight by sitting in front of a computer for 10 hours a day.  I had the worst eating habits.  My breakfast, lunch, and dinner all consisted of meat, meat, meat, mashed potatoes laced with lard, and more meat.  My gut was hanging over my belt in my size 46 pants; I was depressed, had no energy, and suffered from sleep apnea among other conditions.  The skinny people in my life and who I spent time with only made me feel fatter than one could imagine and made me even more self-conscious and unworthy of love from anybody.

My “come to Jesus” moment happened after a routine health screening showed I was in the red (bad) margin of bad health 7 out o

So You're Going To Drill Into My Tooth

This morning, I had an appointment with my dentist in Conway to have a tooth prepped for a crown, it’s something I’ve always dreaded, but knew it had to be done.  Our family never had good dental insurance growing up, and now that I’m an adult, I’m paying for it.  Take care of your teeth, kids.

At first, it took me by surprise, as it’s not a common pleasantry I’m used to, but the first thing “good” that came to my mind was the new nifty Lakewood sign as you come into North Little Rock.

Although I now live a half-hour drive away, I still endure the commute because I’m comfortable with my dentist in Conway and their wonderful staff (i’m confident there are excellent dentists locally).  It’s difficult being comfortable with someone who is going to be grindi
