Community holds vigil for shooting victim

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - "She would just walk in the room and light up the house. She was amazing. She was an amazing sister, amazing mother, amazing wife, amazing everything. She was just amazing," said April Ibearria.

April along other members of her family and the North Little Rock community gathered at the intersection of JFK and McCain Boulevard to remember her sister, Samantha Cass. Cass died at the hospital Wednesday night after being shot while driving through the intersection.

"I just hate that this happened. It's just awful," said neighbor Jason Benbrook who organized the vigil and a fundraiser for Cass' family.

Ibearria said her hope is to get the word out about the shooting so police can identify the person responsible and bring them to justice. Flowers and candles lined the sidewalk near the intersection in memory of Cass.

"The point of today was to get the community to see if anybody knew anything or saw something, call police. Somebody saw something," added Ibearria. "My niece will wake up every morning waiting on mommy and her mommy is not there. Her husband rolls over, and he's not going to have his wife. It's hard. It makes no sense."

Benbrook and his friends collected more than $1,000, according to the family, to help with funeral costs for Samantha Cass.

Hardee's Restaurant, also located at the intersection, said it will donate 10 percent of all the net sale proceeds Saturday, August 17  to the Cass family.
