Photo Gallery | Amateurs, Pros turn out for Sweet Potato Pie Contest

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - The Little Rock Mosaic Templars added a little culture to the holiday season with their annual Say it Ain't Say Sweet Potato Pie Contest.

The Templars Cultural Center hosted the event Sunday afternoon from 2 to 5, featuring 15 different pies. The competition operates on 2 levels, bringing amateurs and professionals from all over central Arkansas.

Director of the Mosaic Templars Sericia Cole said this is a unique way the group can put a spin on holiday traditions.

"Yams and sweet potatoes are an important aspect of the African and African American tradition, so we thought it would be a nice touch to introduce sweet potato pies because at this time of year, a lot of people incorporate the sweet potato pie into their family gatherings, their family meals and feasts, so we wanted to give our own special nod to the sweet potato and the sweet potato pie," she said.

At this event, the Templars also announced that they are collecting toys for the Stop the Violence movement until Saturday, Dec. 14.
